Dear PathRed 2017 Congress Delegate

Dr B Malope-Kgokong Chairperson: Organizing Committee

On behalf of the PathReD 2017 Scientific Programme and Organising Committees, I would like to thank our keynote and invited speakers, chairpersons, workshop facilitators, oral and poster presentation adjudicators, sponsors, exhibitors and delegates for attending the PathReD 2017 Congress. It was also pleasing to see our own NHLS NRF-A rated scientists and top researchers embracing PathReD and sharing their experience and knowledge with us. I thank all of you for actively participating in the scientific tracks, workshops, mentorship programme and satellite sessions. I certainly hope that the congress has been all that you expected it to be and that you have taken the opportunity to meet new colleagues, renew old acquaintances and to have discussions and exchange of experiences, suggestions and opinions with decisions makers, practitioners and researchers from all over the country.

As indicated, our common goal is to improve health care in South Africa and beyond through research. This is in keeping with the NHLS’ mandate to support research addressing the numerous health needs of the country. With its combination of a nationwide diagnostic footprint, access to millions of patient samples, and excellent researchers as its employees, the NHLS is ideally positioned to play a pivotal role in the development and testing of new public health interventions. Therefore PathReD serves as an effective platform to improve collaboration, support and cooperation amongst our academic partners to drive growth and improve institutional health research towards innovative diagnostic pathology solutions.

The NHLS is embarking on the establishment of the Research Development Training and Mentorship Programme (RDTMP) which aims to support emerging junior researchers to enhance research and diagnostic capacity within selected academic institutions. This will promote career development through cross-institutional mentoring to provide a cost-effective way of sharing experiences, knowledge and skills, thus enhancing the learning culture within the participating institutions. We are looking forward to working with our prestigious scholars to encourage an open environment where learning, personal growth and success is a feasible option to most of our passionate and hardworking emerging researchers.

PathReD continues with its 2017 theme of “Driving Innovation and Laboratory Excellence” to encourage innovative thinking and enable creative minds that will drive the initiative to determine the necessary solutions, actions, policies and programs to overcome existing health challenges and issues. We were particularly impressed with the wealth of knowledge that you brought to the success of the PathReD 2017 Congress. Without your support, the conference would not have been a success. I trust that you found your involvement in the PathReD 2017 Congress to be both valuable and rewarding.

Looking forward to your participation in future PathReD Congresses.

Yours faithfully,

Dr Babatyi Malope-Kgokong
Chairperson Organising Committee
